Letter to the Future English 110.01 Students

Dear Future English 110.01 Students,

Since I do not like to write about things, and I do not think that I am a good writer, I did not want to take English classes. But as a GEC, I had to take English 110. On the first day of the class, I just didn't know what to do. However, taking this class, I started to have interest in writing.

Working on my Analytical Research Paper, ARP, I learned how to form what I think about some specific things. In my case, I analyzed a movie poster. At first, I could not form the thoughts that were in my head. But following the steps that we learn during the class, I could form those ideas and drag them up.

Writing a Commonplace was a very interesting exercise. We had to write essays for the students of OSU that is timely, relevant, and compelling. We tried to write essays that OSU students would be interested in. I got better grade on ARP than on Commonplace. I guess it is because when I write a research paper, I just make it academically. However, I had to write an essay for some targeted readers when I write a Commonplace.

Editing a Commonplace was nice. Each of us first writes a letter as if we are editors, then make decisions and explain why we decided so. And then each group members gather their ideas and make a final decision. Sharing the reasons why they decided so, I could think more deeply about other’s writings.

English 110 is a course that you would like eventually. All you need to do is managing time wisely, and not missing any classes. I believe that the instructors go over important points for all your assignments. Hope you would like English 110 as I did. Good luck!

Sincerely,
Young-Hwa Kim

my feelings about food

Food is not just for maintaining life. Food is something more than that. It is something that can control emotions. In my opinion, food makes people happier when they’re down. Food makes even happier when people are with their friends.

Tteokguk, the Korean Traditional Dish

Author: Young-Hwa Kim // Category: , ,

A dish that I would very like to introduce you today is Tteokguk, one of the Korean traditional dishes. Tteokguk is sliced rice pasta soup. Of course, like all the other dishes, this dish can be eaten anytime, but Tteokguk is specially eaten on the Lunar New Year's Day, called Seollal. The first day of the year is like a blank white paper that nothing is written on. People thought Tteok, the rice cake, is pure enough to eat on Seollal because there is no color added; to spend this day with neat and proper minds, people made soup with Tteok, which is Tteokguk. It is unsure since when the Korean people has started eating this dish, but it has been hundreds years at least. All the family members gather together at their grandparent's house and eat Tteokguk together. Eating Tteokguk on the Lunar New Year’s Day, people say that they are now a year older than yesterday. I still remember my childhood that I used to say that I will have several bowls of Tteokguk on Seollal so that I can be several years older.

My Possible Primary Sources

I found this poster of the movie "Fast Food Nation" very interesting. A baby is wearing the Stars and Stripes patterned diaper. This baby is stretching his hands to hamburgers. This poster is indicating that American people, since their babyhood, are exposed to fast food. I could see that Americans are closely related to fast food as seen in the poster. When I first came to America, every time I eat fast food, what I could hear from my friends was, “Lindsey, you’re Americanized!”

Primary Source #2

This painting, easily accessible on the Internet, was very interesting, but funny at the same time. The two people are fighting in a factory area. These two people are not ordinary. One on the left is Ronald, the mascot of McDonald’s; one on the right is Colonel Sanders, the founder and the mascot of KFC. The painter is representing competition between fast food chains by using their mascots.

What's in my refrigerator?

Author: Young-Hwa Kim // Category:

As a college student living in the dorm, I don’t have any special kinds of food in my refrigerator. What I have in my refrigerator are:

1. Some frozen food
2. Soymilk
3. Pomegranate juice
4. Some salads
5. Canned fruit

Reflecting to the item lists that are in my refrigerator, you can see that I care about my health. Firstly, though some frozen foods are not necessarily good for our health, I still keep those in my refrigerator in case I don’t have chance to get food in the market place. Since I hate to go hungry, frozen food is something that I have to keep in my refrigerator. Secondly, I have much soymilk in my refrigerator. Soymilk is not only tasty but also good for our health because it is made with soybean, that has plenty protein. Thirdly, pomegranate juice has plenty antioxidants that lowers the risk of diseases. Fourthly, I have some salads in my refrigerator that are rich in minerals and fibers. Finally, I have canned fruit because I prefer to eat with canned fruit than any kinds of dressings when I eat salads. It is easy to know that I was grown up in a family that cares a lot about health. However, no one would be able to know what kind of person I am, other than the fact that I care about my health.
